The expectations for the 2022 Maltese softball season are very high after the Għajnsielem Redcoats won the Fastpitch National title in 2021. Coaches are working for players to reach their full potential before the 2022 Women’s Softball European Championship.

In 2021, the Għajnsielem Redcoats women’s softball team retained the Fastpitch National title for the fourth season in a row. The Redcoats won the first four games of the best-of-seven Championship Series against the Mellieħa Curves, thus sweeping their opponents.

Several players contributed to the success of the Għajnsielem Redcoats. The leadoff Laragh Tabone was key in the box, together with Estelle Scicluna, Marilise Vella, and Simona Refalo. The young players on the team such as Clarissa Camilleri and Lara Buttigieg performed like veterans. And the two imports Dominique Humphrey and Taylor Ann Edwards had outstanding performances on the field and helped coach the team.

The constant over the four Championship titles on the trot for the Redcoats was starting pitcher Estelle Scicluna. In the four games of the Championship series, she pitched 20 innings and struck out 29 batters out of the 92 she faced. Of the 21 runs that the Redcoats allowed, only 11 were earned, for an ERA of 3.85.

The Redcoats hope for another title in 2022, thanks to the mix of experienced players alongside the younger ones. The return of Gianella Mallia to the team after a two-season absence also bodes well.

In 2022, the Maltese coaches expect a great effort from the players because of the 2022 Women’s Softball European Championship coming up in July in Sant Boi, Spain. Players in Malta will train to achieve their full potential and excel in representing their country for the first time at one of the top softball events in Europe.
